THE POSTE HOUSE
SKEABOST BRIDGE PORTREE
ISLE OF SKYE
IV51 9NP

OFFERS: IN THE REGION OF £200,000 ARE INVITED

Location Map

A RARE OPPORTUNITY TO BUY A CATEGORY ‘B’ LISTED BUILDING STEEPED IN HISTORY – FORMERLY AN OLD DROVERS INN, POST OFFICE AND NOW A FOUR BEDROOM FAMILY HOME WITH A SELF CONTAINED ANNEX, SUNSTANTIAL GARDEN AREA AND DIRECT ACCESS TO THE RIVER SNIZORT.

ACCOMMODATION:
THE POSTE HOUSE: GROUND FLOOR: ENTRANCE PORCH, DRAWING ROOM, DINING ROOM, KITCHEN AND WC.
FIRST FLOOR: TWO LANDINGS, FOUR BEDROOMS, FURTHER BOX ROOM AND BATHROOM.
SELF CONTAINED COTTAGE: LIVING ROOM/KITCHEN AND EN-SUITE BEDROOM.

The Poste House is a two storey category B listed building steeped in history. No documented date for the building is actually known but from its appearance a late 18th – mid 19th centaury date range is likely. The property is located adjacent to an old bridge which crosses the river Snizort which dates from around this time and it is doubtful that the property pre-dates the bridge itself.

It is believed that the property was originally known as ‘Tigh na Ridhe’ (House in the Glen). Being located on the ‘drove road’ between Portree and Dunvegan it was a half-way house where drovers fed their horses and obtaned refreshments for themselves - possibly even a bed for the night. The property is also believed to have been known as ‘Tigh na Ripple’ (House of Exchange) – as the name implies where they changed horses before continuing on their journey. Another name associated with the property is ‘The Old Drover’s Inn’.

The first association the property has with the post office was in 1855 when it was used as a receiving office although it was not until 1889 that The Old Drover’s Inn became the new sub-post office. A post office continued to be run from the property for over 100 years. Prior to its conversion into a dwelling in the early 1990’s the property was also used as a knitwear shop and tweed outlet.

Whilst the property has had a variety of uses, many of what are believed to be the original features remain including the old Ballachulish slate roof, leaded windows, main staircase, v-lining and leaded windows.

The property was converted into a dwelling house in the early 1990’s but would benefit from further modernisation and upgrading. As a listed building and changes or improvements may require listed building consent and/or planning consent. Interested parties may wish to discuss this with the local planning authority – The Highland Council, Planning & Building Services, Kings House, The Green, Portree, Isle of Skye. Tel: 01478 612412

In addition to the main house, there is a small self contained annex in the garden. This was converted some 10/15 years ago. The building was formerly used as kennels.

LOCATION
The Poste House is located a stones throw from St Columba’s Isle which is situated in a division of the river Snizort. St Columba’s Isle is one of the most significant historical sites on skye. As early as the 11th centaury the island was the seat of the Bishop of the Westen Isles of Scotland. A cathedral was established there and its outline remains visible today. The island also has a long tradition of use as a cemetery and two Crusaders graves can be found there testifying to its use as a place of internment during the middle ages. The last recorded burial on the island took place in the early 1970s.

The Poste House is located in an area known as Skeabost Bridge at the head of Loch Snizort Beag and just a 10 minute drive from Portree – the capital of the Isle of Skye. Close by is the Skeabost House Hotel offering food and a ‘local’ within walking distance together with a 9 hole golf course. Salmon fishing is also available on the river subject to obtaining the relevant licence. Primary education is available at MacDiarmid Primary School on Carbost. Portree has all the services and facilities you would expect of a growing town including supermarkets, banks shops, secondary schooling, library, swimming pool and a cottage hospital.

Located in the centre of the island, the property is the ideal base to explore the beautiful Isle of Skye
